Ron Howard to Andy Griffith: You're Next

It appears that Don Knotts died night before last. What a sad loss for our collective televisual experience. He was only 81, which I suppose seems quite young since he was one of those people who was old forever. Barney Fife never seemed like much of a spring chicken to me, and Mr. Furley (a personal favorite in after school syndication) was nothing if not an old man. His period on Three's Company was so much more entertaining than the Ropers. But it's really Barney Fife that everyone will think of first, just like Lucille Ball could never really be anybody but Lucy Ricardo.

Tom Bosley and Marion Ross had better watch out.
